FILM SCREENING "Shanshula" - Documentary about Palestinian fishing families in Gaza Thurs 20th Feb Áras Éanna 7-8pm (doirse 6.45pm) ~~~~~~~~~~ Coastal communities across Ireland and Scotland will host screenings of the documentary Shanshula, which tells the compelling story of Palestinian fishermen and fisherwomen in Gaza. Directed by Palestinian filmmaker and human rights activist Musheir El Farra, the film follows the Palestinian fishing community’s struggle for survival under Israel’s decades-long blockade and now genocide of the Gaza Strip. "Shanshula" is local slang for a type of fishing net used in Gaza, a symbol of the enduring spirit of these families despite overwhelming adversity. The film provides a harrowing insight into a community whose lives and livelihoods have been under attack for decades by the Israeli nazy, which lethally enforces restrictions - pitching gunboats against rowing boats. The international screening is part of a global initiative for World Social Justice Day where Shanshula is being shown in coastal communities worldwide, with the aim of developing a solidarity campaign among fishing communities. Community groups along the Atlantic seaboard and islands from an Daingean, Kerry and north to Árainn Mhór, Donegal, as well as Scotland, will host the screenings simultaneously. They will be introduced live online by Musheir El Farra accompanied by some of the fishermen in Gaza, who have returned to their devastated neighbourhood. The screenings are free, with donations invited to a solidarity fund that will be sent directly to the displaced, maimed and bereaved fishing families of Gaza. Running time: 33 minutes Age rating: PG, contains some distressing scenes

An exhibition by Alan James Burn in partnership with Galway City Arts Office which discusses climate change and neurodiversity. This provides us with an opportunity to learn from Alan’s project partner about Neuro Pride & the Arts and Disability. Augmented Body, Altered Mind is an interactive exhibition weaving a brain-computer interface with an audiovisual environment. The artwork celebrates divergent cognitive abilities used for creative problem-solving and explores the potential to collectively reshape the world towards a more diverse and sustainable future. Delving into the climate challenge and tech-growth narratives, Augmented Body, Altered Mind examines correlations between the natural world, neurology, philosophy, and neurodivergence. Immersed in a projected environment and multi-channel soundscape, visitors co-create the artwork in real-time by wearing a brain-sensing headset that detects electric signals generated by different brain waves. By doing so, audiences control evocative visuals reminiscent of environmental and neurological imagery and patterns. Climate change disproportionately affects people with disabilities, including from the lack of accessible information and vulnerabilities in extreme weather events. Underpinned by the theory of Complementary Cognition and the psychological aspects of the climate challenge, the artwork encourages new approaches to thinking about the accelerating environmental crisis and how it could be tackled. Highlighting the importance of accessibility, Augmented Body, Altered Mind welcomes all audiences to engage, collaborate, and shape the artwork.

This September acclaimed artist Alan James Burns will bring their interactive artwork ‘Augmented Body, Altered Mind', to Áras Éanna. This work celebrates the neurodivergent mind and highlights the importance of inclusive design and creative thinking when addressing climate action. On September 27 we will bring together climate action policymakers, activists, people with lived experience of disability and climate conscious individuals for a day of art, conversation, light lunch and a workshop. The goal of the day is to explore together how climate action can be created in a manner that is increasingly just and accessible to all. Our aim is to equip attendees with practical skill sets and collect perspectives that are vital to informing policy. In particular we are looking for the perspectives of individuals from Inis Oírr and people from Inis Oírr who may identify with having access barriers. If you are interested in the event and would like to join us on the day you can register your interest at https://form.jotform.com/242194009239355 or alternatively email info@alanjamesburns.com for further information.

The exhibition will be launched by Professor Rióna Ní Fhrighil on Saturday 12th of October, and will run for the remainder of the month. It couples deft songwriting with intricate guitar and dobro playing that is the hallmark of Tom’s work. Portman is joined on this album by maestro Maciej (Magic) Zaworonek’s poetic harmonica lines. The title track ‘Train to Nowhere’ was penned by Australian song writer Kevin Lym, to a Dobro melody Tom was playing as they busked & drifted their way around the south of France many years ago.
